Angela Tsai-Jung Chiang

A fashion and visual designer working across knitwear, printed textile and theatre costume — and the founder of the knitwear label hello ronron.

I hold a BA in Fashion Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London. My graduate collection, The Withering Flower, drew on the mythology and taboo of flowers in Taiwanese and wider Oriental culture, and was published as a New Waves designer interview by 1 Granary before being picked up across European, Hong Kong and Chinese press.

That research became a continuous practice in Chinese historical prints, reinterpreted through contemporary design. I designed costume and print collections for Shinehouse Theatre at Taiwan’s National Theatre Experimental Theatre and the Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center, uniforms and print identity for the opening of ibis KLCC in Kuala Lumpur, and product ranges for Daikin.

I grew up transforming preloved garments from my mother’s wardrobe, taught by the skillful hands of the women in my family — my grandmother hand-quilted bed linens in classic Taiwan peony prints and knitted sweaters that grew as I did. Those early memories are why I work in knit. From Taiwan’s humid summers to Canada’s winters, across the UK and Malaysia, my clothes have always travelled with me, which is exactly what hello ronron is built for: versatile, low-waste knitwear that layers in the cold and breathes in the heat, drawing on Cheongsam and Kebaya construction.

Running the label taught me the whole chain — range planning, technical development with mills, fit and grading, sourcing, costing, art direction and retail. I’m now bringing that combination of craft research and commercial discipline to Sweden, where quality, longevity and responsible production are already the standard.
